MOON : OUR NEAREST NEIGHBOUR
Moon also known as our natural satellite is our neighbour
orbiting around the earth. Made of dust, rocks and lunar soil regolith .It has
alike structural composition to the earth. Solid rocky and dusty crust with solid and semi
solid mantle and inner core and fluid iron outer core with lots of craters on
its surface which were created by heavy bombardments from meteors and comets
over a period of time .
A question arises that if our moon had a fluid iron outer
core then what about the magnetic fields of the moon why moon doesn’t generate
magnetic fields? That is due to the much cooler mantle and the lack of
atmosphere on moon because of which there is no protection to the solar winds
which are a stream of charged particles and free electrons and protons made of
plasma.
But how was our moon formed and how did it reached there in
its set orbit like it revolves now? The answer lies 4.5 billion years ago when
our solar system was beginning to take its shape. There were more than 8
planets in our solar system which were significantly smaller and got destroyed
after several collisions between themselves or with other big planets like
earth, mars, venus etc. Though there are numerous amt of hypothesis and
theories about the formation of moon but the most significant and prevailing
one is that moon was formed from an impact of the planet theia and earth .Theia
( a mars sized planet ) around 4.5 billion years ago went on an one on one
collision with the earth .This collision had a giant impact on the surface of
the earth .The impact blasted material into Earth's orbit and then the material
accreted which within the span of few million years formed the Moon.
With a diameter of Approx 6100 km this hit the earth at 45 degree and some hypothesis says that the collision was so gigantic that theia got totally destroyed and huge amount of debris and rocks got blasted in the orbit collecting due to circular orbit motion and gravity and forming our natural satellite, our moon. Still some questions arise like where is the material of theia? And is our moon a part of the earth , if yes than why the minerals and elements present on moon are very little in comparison to the earth .These questions are still unanswered and various hypothesis might come up in future with appropriate conclusion and evidence about the true story of our moon’s formation .
